Learning in Boston
Boston is a great place for meeting and learning when the annual Summer Institute is conducted by Boston College. A large contingent of Australians can always be assured while one of the regular international lecturers is theologian Sr Anne-Marie Confoy RSC who divides her time and her lecturing commitments between Boston and Melbourne. Sr Anne-Marie is pictured (centre) with some of the Australians who made the long trek this year, from left Paul and Kerry Cahill and David O'Connor (in cap) all from Victoria and Chris (back) and Jill Smith from Tasmania.
Joy and sadness at Catholic Enquiry Centre
The Catholic Church's national outreach body, the Catholic Enquiry Centre, is hosting a series of celebrations to mark 50 years of helping people to learn more about Catholicism and, in many cases, to connect with the faith in a life- changing and lasting way. The Catholic Enquiry Centre has been assisting Catholics who wish to return to faith practice and to share information with non-Catholics about the faith since 1959.
Archbishop John Bathersby, the Chairman of the Bishops Commission for Mission and Faith Formation, said that the 50th anniversary was a chance to reflect on the work of the CEC. Already, celebrations to mark the anniversary have taken place in Perth, Brisbane and Sydney as well as with the Bishops at their Plenary Meeting in Sydney in May. The celebrations will continue on Friday, October 23, at 1pm, when Archbishop Denis Hart (Melbourne) will celebrate Mass at St Patrick's Cathedral. Current and former CEC donors in Victoria have been invited and all are welcome to attend.
However one of the great evangelisers of the Catholic Church in Australia, and the founding director of the Catholic Enquiry Centre, Fr Tom White, will not be there. The Irish-born Fr White, a priest of the Melbourne Archdiocese, died recently, aged 86.
Reach out - give life
As Catholics around the world celebrate World Mission month in October, Catholic Mission Australia has asked all Catholics in Australia to remember the children of the world on Children's Mission Day, October 21.
The National Director of Catholic Mission Australia, Martin Teulan, said, "The work for children is paramount for communities all over the world. This Mission month please remember the children on Children's Mission Day, Wednesday, October 21, and know that lives of millions of children are improved thanks to the generosity of Australian Catholics."
This year's theme - reach out: give life - has been inspired by the missionary life of Father Damien of Molokai who was canonised on October 11.

"We'll identify barriers to delivering pastoral care and look at how they can be overcome, share good news stories about what we know works in delivering pastoral care to patients and residents in Catholic facilities, and brainstorm new possibilities," said CHA CEO Martin Laverty.
"The forum will also examine professional development and interfaith issues, and look at how pastoral care in health and aged care can work in conjunction with pastoral care delivered within parishes."
The forum will be held from 9am-4pm at the Metropole Hotel Apartment and Conference Centre in Fitzroy, Victoria.

Distress in the workplace

"To avoid learning about this topic can limit your effectiveness and can even be dangerous if a person in your care is unwell or distressed," he said.
Topics to be covered will include theories of abnormal behaviour, assessment and diagnosis, mood and addictive disorders, suicide, sexuality, understanding internet pornography, personality types and their disorders.
The workshop will be held at the Burwood RSL, Burwood from 9am-3.30pm Monday-Thursday and 9am-noon on the Friday.
