In a few days time, we, the leaders of Catholic Religious in Australia, will gather for our annual assembly.
Our focus this year is on the nature of our multi-faith society - its reality, gift and challenge.
It is appropriate, too, that this focus follows on so closely to the Pope's recent visit to the Middle East, where he spoke of the importance of such inter-religious dialogue for the well being and peace of our world.
At a meeting of organisations for interreligious dialogue in Jerusalem, on May 11, he said: "They (our differences) provide a wonderful opportunity for people of different religions to live together in profound respect, esteem and appreciation, encouraging one another in the ways of God."
Over the period of the assembly, we will have the opportunity to listen and dialogue with members of the Abrahamic faiths - with those of the Jewish and Islamic faiths - so that we might grow in understanding, appreciation and esteem.
The task of Catholic Religious Australia is to support the contemplative and prophetic role of religious women and men within the Australian church and society.
This dialogue is an opportunity for us to engage meaningfully with our contemplative spirit, an essential part of true dialogue, where listening with the heart as well as the mind brings our identity into harmony.
Through dialogue, we can share insights that can change us; change both the speaker and the listener. We enter into relationships that will shape our lives and our very beings.
In a world where conflict is often defined in religious terms, these days together can give witness to greater possibilities for collaboration and cooperation across our differences.
Mercy and justice are integral to all three faiths and it is in this spirit that we seek to further dialogue and so emphasis and respect our common humanity and the dignity of all peoples.
