I am learning from the Chinese what community really means. They may never have heard of the doctrine of the Trinity but their closeness to one another is a triumph of an ancient culture over the efforts of Mao and materialism, whether capitalist or communist, to divide and destroy.

Paul Harriss Fellowship to Ballarat East Sister of Mercy
Sister Helen Nolen, a Sister of Mercy of the Ballarat East Congregation, has been  honoured  by Rotary Mosman (NSW) with the prestigious Paul Harris Fellowship Award for her outstanding contribution to the community, particularly to the people of Fohorem in Timor Leste.

A Rich Young Nation
The Australian Catholic Bishops have issued an urgent call for action to achieve justice for those afflicted by poverty in our affluent society in the 2008 Social Justice Statement, A Rich Young Nation: The challenge of affluence and poverty in Australia.  The 2008 Social Justice Sunday Statement was launched on Wednesday, September 17, at Mary MacKillop Place, North Sydney, by Professor Julian Disney AO, National Chair of Anti‐Poverty Week. The respondent was Ms Elizabeth Proust, Director of Nonprofit Australia.

Protest priest jailed
A Catholic priest who is a member of the London Catholic Worker community is in prison after he refused to pay a fine following a peace protest which was ruled to have broken public order restrictions.

Australian Catholic University awarded for excellence in inter-faith relations
September 25: Australian Catholic University (ACU National) has been recognised for its contributions to interfaith relations by the Australian Intercultural Society (AIS). The Award for Excellence in Academia was presented to the university at a Ramadan Iftar dinner. The  award was introduced by the AIS to recognise academic institutions that have played an important role in fostering social cohesion and building community harmony. One of the main aims of the AIS is to promote and foster harmonious relations between faith communities in Australian society.

Religious leaders add voice to UN drive to end violence against women
NEW YORK, September. 25: Religious leaders from Africa, Asia and North America today pleded to help end one of the most pervasive human rights violations in the world by signing on to the "Say NO to Violence against Women Campaign," organized bythe United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM).  Representing such diverse faiths as Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism,Judaism and Islam, the leaders added their voice to an ever-growing list of governments, civil society groups and individuals who want to eliminate ascourge that affects as many as one in three women and girls.

We can learn from Luther too, says top Cardinal

September 24:  Roman Catholics can learn from the 16th-century Protestant reformer Martin Luther, the Vatican's top official for Christian unity, has said, as Protestant churches in Germany prepare to launch a 10-year series of events leading up to the 500th anniversary in 2017 of  the Lutheran Reformation.  In an interview published in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper, Cardinal Walter Kasper encouraged Catholics to read Luther's commentaries on the Bible, and his "hymns full of spiritual power", the German  Protestant news agency epd reported.
